WHAT IT IS
Myofunctional therapy is an exercise-based therapy. Similar to physical therapy exercises, only for the muscles of the mouth, tongue and face. These exercises are designed to improve issues with talking, eating, swallowing or breathing. Research has found that myofunctional therapy may also be an effective treatment for sleep-disordered breathing.
WHO NEEDS IT
Myofunctional therapy is specifically for patients who present with orofacial myofunctional disorders. An orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) is when there is an abnormal lip, jaw, or tongue position during rest, swallowing or speech. You may also see this when there are prolonged oral habits, like thumb or finger sucking. If left untreated OMDs can lead to an array of symptoms including headaches, poor posture, TMJ discomfort, behavioral issues, learning inefficiencies, sleep-disordered breathing, dental malocclusion, facial asymmetry and more.
HOW IT WORKS
We start with a comprehensive evaluation where we gather information to determine if referrals or other collaborative treatment recommendations are warranted. Once all the data is collected we customize your exercises and treatment program to accommodate your specific therapy goals. Treatment length varies per patient, but most start seeing improvements in symptoms in 8 weeks.

Habit Elimination Program

These are specific programs to eliminate noxious oral habits that interfere with proper oral rest posture or orthodontics. When you are ready to stop any noxious oral habits, but you know you need some help, our habit elimination program is established on the theme of positive reinforcement to encourage a healthy stop.

The Mini Myo
Myofunctional Therapy Program
An a-la-carte custom myofunctional therapy stretch + exercise program for infants, toddlers, special needs clients and children who need tongue, lip, and/or buccal tie releases (frenectomy/frenuloplasty procedures) and aren't quite ready for a comprehensive myofunctional therapy program, but would benefit from myofunctional therapy stretches and exercises to gain function/motor control prior to a frenectomy. Reach out for your specific plan/needs based on what your child presents with.
